Five fish markets for artisanal fisheries in Haiti
Les Cayes · Jérémie · Anse-d’Hainault · Bainet · Marigot
The project encompasses the design of four new fish markets and the rehabilitation of the market in Marigot, as part of the Artisanal Fisheries Development Program under Haiti’s Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Rural Development. Its objective is to improve conditions for the commercialization, hygiene, and preservation of fishery products, thereby strengthening an activity essential to the economies of coastal communities.
Five sites and three typologies allow a common strategy to be adapted to different scales and modes of exchange. In Les Cayes and Jérémie, urban markets concentrate retail stalls under large roofs, featuring organized circulation paths and support services. In Anse-d’Hainault and Bainet, retail activity is distributed across sets of modular pavilions, connected to the coastline and outdoor spaces. The Marigot market is designed for wholesale operations, with a specific layout for landing, weighing, and transferring fish to distribution vehicles.
The architecture prioritizes natural ventilation and lighting, protection from sun and rain, and ease of cleaning. Stalls are equipped with washable surfaces, water supply, and wastewater drainage, while auxiliary facilities include restrooms, storage areas, and waste management and collection systems tailored to the specific needs of each market.
The design accounts for the marine environment as well as seismic and cyclonic risks, incorporating solar energy solutions, rainwater harvesting, and water storage to enhance operational autonomy. Landscaping and sheltered walkways complete a proposal that conceives the market both as an economic infrastructure and as a place for community gathering.
