Jérémie Market

Year 2023-2026

Location Jérémie, Haiti

Client Expertise France (Funding: European Union)

Markets play a central role in Haiti’s economy. Present throughout the country and at different scales, they sustain much of the commercial activity and guarantee the supply of food and essential goods.

Jérémie, one of the main cities of the Grand’Anse region, has more than 70,000 inhabitants. Its market is a major retail trade hub, with a mostly non-agricultural offering, since most trade in farm produce is concentrated in nearby rural markets. According to a diagnostic study by the consultancy INSUCO, it receives an average of 5,000 people a day and brings together around 1,600 vendors.

These figures show the importance of the facility and the scale of the challenge: improving selling, circulation, hygiene and management conditions within the available funding limits.

The original proposal organized the roughly 8,000 m² site with two covered buildings — Hall 1 and Hall 2 — and a series of pergolas, extending the platform toward the sea up to a reasonable limit. The complex included food service areas, sanitary blocks for the public and vendors, and administration and management offices.

With an initial budget of close to $4.5 million, the project has undergone successive adjustments to fit the available funding. A 1,000 m² hall is currently under construction, with a 720 m² mezzanine, while the possibility of completing the intervention with new covered spaces is being evaluated.

Completion of the works is expected by May 2027. The project aims to provide Jérémie with commercial infrastructure suited to its regional role, although the scope of the intervention remains constrained by the gap between identified needs and available resources.
