Year 2021-2026
Location Sud, Grand’Anse, Nippes, Nord and Nord-Ouest Departments, Haiti
Client MITC (Funding: World Bank – PGRRAC project)
This is an extensive project still under implementation. PGRRAC (Climate Risk and Resilience Management), funded by the World Bank, includes identifying between 5 and 8 sites in each department that could serve to build a network of shelter buildings for climate emergencies.
These buildings must be located within school grounds and be multifunctional — usable for school- or community-related purposes, but able to shelter local families in the event of a climate emergency.
The project phases included site identification and a feasibility study for each site, which required travelling through very complex geographies and remote areas, covering more than 60 sites in total.
The project is developed with modular elements that can be composed and combined according to the physical characteristics of each site, and could even serve as open architecture in the future.
The design proposes an image of combined “little houses” to avoid a massive effect and to be recognized by the community as something habitable, not exclusively a school building.
We Architects is in charge of supervising the construction of 10 shelters, in the South and Grand’Anse departments.
