Rehabilitation proposals for student residences across 3 campuses in Dakar: CLAUDEL, ESP and UCAD.
The existing residential buildings, in very poor conditions, are not in keeping with the expected functionality of the campus. They show significant deterioration due to lack of maintenance and house more students than they reasonably should.
One of the client’s requirements is the use of ceramic elements, bricks, lattices, etc. One of the buildings on the UCAD campus is an interesting heritage building from the 1960s or earlier, with a notable interior courtyard.
The design was driven by an ambition for high-quality internal spaces and for thermal comfort: careful choice of materials, natural ventilation, a balance between sun-screening and sufficient natural light, wind channelling, etc. The project proposes new ventilated facade designs with a new metal and ceramic lattice skin, extending the limit of the facade, thus achieving a greater surface area in the rooms.
This greater housing capacity implies the need to expand hygiene spaces, increasing community bathrooms and showers.
